While the rooms and facilities at the Tenaya are nicer, there's nothing like having a view of Yosemite Falls in full splendor from your balcony at the Yosemite Lodge. (One last thought: in May, the waterfalls are a major draw in the park. So IMHO I would stick with visiting the valley, heading to Glacier Point if it's open, and seeing the Big Trees at the Mariposa Grove. While the hike to Wapama Falls is not difficult, you are hiking alongside a man-made reservoir, which really can't compare to climbing the Golden Staircase of Vernal and Nevada Falls. The drive from H-H to the valley is at least an hour, and from the valley to Fish Camp almost an hour. I would agree that if you plan to spend both nights at Tenaya Lodge, you should skip Hetch-Hetchy. If you are bypassing the Valley, then subtract about 10-15 minutes (all distances are from the Valley Visitor Center.) So Valley -> Hetch Hetchy is 1 hr 15 min and Valley -> Fish Camp is 1 hr 15 min I'd estimate it's probably 2 to 2 1/4 hours from the Tenaya Lodge to the Hetch Hetchy parking lot. This driving time/mileage chart should help you. After we walked partway back down, we just caught another shuttle to return to the parking lot. When my kids were little, we rode the tram (yikes$$) and asked to be dropped off to make the short hike up to Wawona Point. Here is the Mariposa Grove brochure: If you are walking instead of taking the tram, this could definitely take all morning. Let me know if you can find it via the Itineraries Link on the right (my first reader!) If any of the ideas appeal to you, they could be done on Monday or Tuesday. I just added a One Day in the Valley itinerary. But if you're trying to have a bit of a resort type vacation, with waiters bringing you drinks poolside, or dining in a quiet atmosphere, then the Tenaya Lodge is definitely better than Yosemite Lodge.Īre you planning to hike the Mist trail to the top of Vernal Fall, or heading all the way up to Nevada Fall? Personally, I think Fish Camp is too far away, even as nice as the Tenaya Lodge is. But we seem to spend all our time hiking the high country. ![]() My hiking guide lists a nice 3 mile round trip hike to Lookout Point in the Hetch Hetchy region, and says the season is early April to late October. ![]() Hopefully HotelCharlotte or marmot will pipe in here with some Hetch Hetchy info. You might even be lucky enough to drive up Glacier Point, but after the snow last week, I wouldn't count on it! Here is a chart with some historical road data: They didn't keep record of the Mariposa Grove road until recently, but I think you'll be okay in early May.
